Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medical solution designed to replace the hormones that the body no longer produces due to the aging process. HRT can treat a variety of conditions, including menopause for women and androgen deficiency for men, allowing patients to experience enhanced peace of mind, comfort, and well-being.
What is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy?
Bioidentical hormone replacement pellet therapy is a customizable approach to hormone replacement. This technique allows a patient’s body to absorb the exact level of hormones that they need using a delivery method that the body can process in a timely and efficient manner.
Pellets are tiny capsules (think a grain of rice) that contain vital hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. A bioidentical hormone is the exact molecular structure of hormones that the body naturally produces.
These pellets are inserted under the skin and slowly dissolve over a period of several months, allowing the hormones to dissipate into the bloodstream. Various studies have found that patients start to see the effects of hormone optimization up to four weeks after the pellet has been inserted. That said, every patient is unique and may experience these effects faster or slower, depending on their biology and other factors.
Hormones delivered by pellet therapy bypass the liver, do not have an impact on clotting factors, do not increase the risk of blood clots, and do not cause excess hormonal fluctuations, which can be problematic for some patients.* Unlike synthetic hormones, which have a molecular structure that is different from what the body naturally produces, bioidentical hormone pellets are derived from soy or yams to achieve a natural formula that is compatible with the human body.
What symptoms can be addressed with HRT?
Hormone imbalances develop when a patient has too much or too little of a certain hormone in their bloodstream. Even slight imbalances can lead to major changes in the way the body works.
Women with hormone imbalances typically develop the following issues:
- Decreased bone mass
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Trouble sleeping
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Depressed mood
- Mood swings
- Hot flashes
- Decreased sex drive
- Pain/discomfort during intercourse
- Brain fog
Men with hormone imbalances usually develop the following:
- Low libido
- Increased body fat (especially in the abdomen)
- Erectile dysfunction
- Loss of muscle mass
- Decreased bone mass
- Mood changes and irritability
- Memory problems
- Brain fog
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep issues
- Gynecomastia (male breasts)
Who is a candidate for bioidentical hormone pellet therapy in Virginia Beach?
After conducting a consultation and full lab work, our team of practitioners will determine whether the patient is a candidate for bioidentical hormone pellet therapy. A brief follow-up appointment will be scheduled in order to review the patient’s results and, when appropriate, another appointment will be set for pellet therapy insertion.
How are the pellets inserted?
The patient will be taken to an exam room where the insertion site, usually in the upper buttock region, is numbed. A small incision is made through which the hormone pellet will be inserted. After the procedure is completed, a small bandage is placed over the insertion site. As the pellet dissolves, its contents are absorbed by the body. As every patient has their own unique needs, every pellet is specially designed to address unique concerns. Many patients notice a difference in as little as a month, but the full effects usually take six months to manifest.
Post-Insertion care:
After the pellet-insertion process is complete, it is recommended that the patient abstain from all forms of lower body exercise for a brief period of time. Anything more strenuous than a walk around the block should be avoided. It is ok for the patient to take showers, but they should avoid submerging themselves in water (baths, pools, hot tubs, etc). Once the bandage has been removed, the patient can resume their normal activities as they please.
How long do the pellets last?
The pellets can last anywhere from three to six months depending on the patient’s sex, weight, rate of absorption, and the extent of their hormone imbalance at the time of insertion. Pellets are reinserted at a rate of two to four times per year to ensure that the patient’s hormones are optimized and balanced. Patients usually start to feel the effects of the treatment after their second appointment.
